In all instances, the Trump administration has claimed to be combating antisemitism, citing the faculties’ responses to student-led campus protests in solidarity with Gaza. “It’s time for us to step again … and assume extra critically about how we run our universities,” says former Columbia regulation professor Katherine Franke, who says college students from overseas, even these with inexperienced playing cards and U.S. citizenship, are actually “terrified” of being swept up within the Trump administration’s crackdown. “It looks like a type of racial and ethnic cleaning that’s occurring on our campuses.”
