An underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 was detected within the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge on Tuesday morning.
The tremor, recorded at 08:05 on 1 April 2025, struck at a depth of 10km beneath the floor, with its epicentre situated at 46.1°S and 14.2°W, roughly 3 000km from South Africa’s coast.
No tsunami warning
Regardless of the quake’s power, no tsunami warning has been issued, in keeping with information from america Geological Survey (USGS).
Angelo Ricardo Hoorn, who is based in George in the Western Cape and works at the Severe Weather and Information Centre SA, shared the information on the centre’s Facebook page.
He assured the public that this was not an April Fool’s prank.
