Gross sales of recent autos surged in March, signalling elevated shopper confidence in SA.
Motor business umbrella physique Naamsa reported 49,493 gross sales final month, a 12.5% enhance over March 2024. Passenger automobiles led the cost, hovering by 25.3% to 33,447 models, pushed by sturdy shopper demand and a secure lending atmosphere, stated Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa.
“The automotive sector benefited from secure inflation at 3.2% year-on-year in February and earlier financial easing, which supported shopper confidence and car financing,” he stated.
Gross sales of recent mild industrial autos, bakkies and minibuses, at 13,328 models, have been 8.4% down. Medium vehicles declined 1.8% to 696 models and heavy vehicles have been down 0.5% to 2,022.
Export gross sales have been 39,477 autos final month, a 31.1% enhance over March 2024. The expansion coincided with this week’s US presidential announcement threatening the way forward for SA exports, underscoring the sector’s capability to face up to geopolitical shifts, stated Mabasa.
Toyota remained the highest promoting home model in March with 11,660 models, however Suzuki took over from Volkswagen for the third consecutive month as SA’s second-best-selling model.
