On November 11 1955, beneath a scorching Free State solar, three males stood beside their vehicles, watching as the primary litres of artificial gasoline flowed via a pipe.
The vehicles belonged to Sasol’s administrators — Frans du Toit, Hendrik van Eck and Etienne Rousseau — and people drops of gasoline represented way over a technical milestone.
